The Only Keyboard Shortcut You Need to Know
Here's the simplest way Mac users can appear to have elite-level computer skills. Command-Space. That's right--that big long rectangular key in the middle of your keyboard. Just make sure you hold down the command key (that's the key to the left or right of your space bar) first. This sequence opens Spotlight Search on any Mac operating system released since the Bush administration. You can also get the same results by moving your cursor up to the upper right hand corner of your screen and laboriously clicking the little Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass icon (during the Bush administration, Spotlight was actually called Sherlock), but that is SO slow. You don't want slow. You want fast, right? So Command-Space. Then type the first few letters of whatever it is you want to open. Doesn't matter if it's an application, a file or an email message. Spotlight will dutifully find it.**
Command-Space works no matter what application you currently have in front of you, and even if nobody sees you make this maneuver, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you know it.
Mastering this simple keyboard shortcut is one way to wrest back a modicum of control in an increasingly chaotic and ever-expanding universe of added features, endless passwords, and the constant drone of the 24-hour social media-enhanced news cycle. Command-Space is simple. It works. Use it in good health, my friends.
